Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), step by step

A surface inspection method that finds surface-breaking cracks, porosity and laps in non-porous materials — a coloured dye is drawn into the flaw, then pulled back out to form a visible indication. Here’s what it is, why it’s used, and how it’s done.

Why it’s used

Why PT?

  • Finds surface-breaking flaws — cracks, porosity, laps and seams the eye can miss.
  • Works on almost any non-porous material — metals, many plastics, ceramics and glass.
  • Simple, low-cost and portable — visible dye needs no power and little equipment.
  • Widely used on welds, castings and forgings, and for in-service inspection.
  • Remember: PT detects surface-breaking defects only — not subsurface flaws.

The procedure

In the field — 7 steps

PT step 1
Step 01

Clean the surface

Pre-clean the test area — remove dirt, oil, grease, scale and paint, then dry it — so the penetrant can enter any surface-breaking defect.

PT step 2
Step 02

Apply the penetrant

Apply the liquid dye penetrant evenly over the whole test area, fully wetting the surface.

Step 03

Dwell time

Leave the penetrant to dwell (typically 5–30 minutes, to the procedure) so capillary action draws it deep into any surface-breaking flaw.

Step 04

Remove excess penetrant

Wipe the surface penetrant away with a solvent-dampened cloth — never flood it — leaving penetrant only inside the defects.

Step 05

Apply developer

Spray a thin, even coat of developer over the area. The white developer draws the trapped penetrant back out by reverse capillary action.

Step 06

Indication reveals

Penetrant bleeds out into the developer and forms a clear red indication wherever there is a surface-breaking defect. Allow the developer dwell time.

Step 07

Final inspection & evaluation

Inspect under good lighting, evaluate every indication against the acceptance criteria, record the results — then post-clean the part.
